Does Listening to Positive Messages Produce Positive Results?

Twitter has exposed me to some areas that are outside my norm… Reading leadership and management, for example. Tammy Helfrich (@TammyHelfrich) suggested that each of us should “Feed your mind with positive and energetic messages.”

I want to ask myself and my readers, if that does any good, how does that work? As much as I hate to admit it, I’ll bet it works. Possible avenues: 1) God often spoke boldness and courage into people. I think this helped give confidence to act against difficulties. 2) Perhaps it is straight up faith that changes things through prayer and simply through the power of belief.

  1. My take, if i understand what you are asking:

If positive means speaking and modeling the truth in love, I’m all in. If positive messages gloss over real issues, strong emotions, and difficult choices then I don’t get. I honestly still don’t get some of the grossly positive messages on TV or in books. You don’t have to bring messages of fear and punishment, or dwell on suffering and opposition to NOT be a positive message guy. The gospel is super positive, but following Jesus, full of great joy and peace, still walks out in a world that is daily growing antithetical to the kingdom above. Once in while I would like a meaty message from some of these blessed positive preachers. Maybe the viewership would tank if that happened.

    1. Thanks, Justin, for sharing those thoughts. I agree with you about preaching! I think that there are many things that are important for us to understand to live a successful life of faith, and perhaps some of those things are deeper, and perhaps some of those things will require us to change.

I didn’t spell out very well what I was thinking when I wrote the post. I was responding to a short article, and not just the article, but my interpretation of the article. 😉 I think what I was thinking about was listening to podcasts and reading articles that speak of courage and success, that reinforce the value of risking wisely. These are things I tend not to gravitate towards. But I also know that I do not go out on a limb very often or “run to the battle” very often. And I think that if I were to stir up my faith and boldness by listening to positive reinforcement, I would probably be bolder in my actions.
