Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. — John 1:12 (NIV)
I have been coming to realize in the last few weeks how many different things God offers to us that are really great deals but which require at least some kind of action or response on our part. And it is amazing to me the number of people who fail to respond!
In the preceding verses, we saw that Jesus was rejected by the very people he came to rescue. But now we see that the few who do recognize who Jesus is and who welcome Him into their lives through putting their trust in Him, those are the one who receive from Jesus the special blessing of becoming children of God!
How do you respond to people who warmly receive you compared to people who reject you? Don’t you naturally reflect back in a similar manner to how the other party came to you? You reject those who reject you, and you warmly receive those who warmly receive you. Jesus came in the world as light shining into darkness. The easiest thing to do was to shine brightly as well — but many chose not to. Contrary to our normal way of thinking, people actually have to work harder to reject Jesus than they do to receive Him. Nonetheless, Jesus respects each person’s decision. Yet He delights in those who do receive Him gladly, and brings us into His family. What a precious gift He has given us!
