Luke 8:1-3. We are told that in addition to the twelve apostles that were with Jesus, that were several women who provided for the group out of their own means. Matthew 12:22-23; Mark 3:20-21. In the Matthew passage, Jesus heals a man who was both mute and blind, and all of the people were amazed. In the Mark passage, Jesus’ own family thought he was crazy because of all of the things that were happening.
Matthew 12:24-37; Mark 3:22-30. The scribes claim that Jesus cast out evil spirits using the power of Satan. But Jesus tells them that Satan’s kingdom could not stand if it were casting out its own members. He then goes onto say that blaspheming the Holy Spirit was the unforgivable sin. That is, claiming that God’s Spirit is actually Satan’s spirit. Then he tells us something very wise — you can tell what is in a person’s heart by the fruit coming forth, particularly in the form of speech.
Matthew 12:38-45. Some scribes and Pharisees asked Jesus for a sign. But Jesus said he would not give them a sign (even though he had done all the miracles already mentioned). But rather he would give them the sign of Jonah — that he would be three days and three nights in the earth. Indeed, that was an amazing sign!
Then Jesus spoke out about the unbelief of the Jewish people who did not respond to Jesus’ teaching and miracles. He used as examples Nineveh responding to the message of Jonah, and the Queen of Sheba traveling a great distance to hear the wisdom of Solomon. Yet Jesus was far superior to both Jonah and Solomon.
Finally, Jesus speaks about an evil spirit leaving a person, and when it finds nowhere else to go, it returns to the person with seven demons even more evil than itself.
Matthew 12:46-50; Mark 3:31-35; Luke 8:19-21. Jesus was with a large crowd, and his mother and brothers tried to call him to speak with him. But he replied that whoever does the will of God is his brother and sister and mother.
My favorite passage and other random thoughts
I choose Luke 8:2-3 as my favorite passage. I am always intrigued how Jesus changes lives. Here we find out that a number of women followed Jesus and took care of his needs and those of his disciples out of their own means. And these women who followed Jesus all were either healed by Jesus or had demons cast out of them by Jesus. Gratefulness and love are the natural outflow when someone does something for you that set you free or gave you back your life. And these women chose to devote themselves to Jesus, out of gratitude, but also realizing that they had no better way to spend their lives on earth than following and loving on Jesus.
