After Completing the Bible Reading

Broader outline of each section of passage

Matthew 4:23-25; Mark 3:7-12. Jesus was very popular at this point. He was going throughout Galilee, preaching and healing and casting out demons. People were coming from neighboring regions with their sick and to see him.

Luke 6:12. Jesus prayed all night long out on a mountain.

Mark 3:13-19; Luke 6:13-16. After Jesus’ night on the mountain praying, he came down and named his 12 disciples. In Mark 3:14-15, we learn that the reasons that Jesus gave for appointing the disciples so that they might be sent out to preach and cast out demons.

Luke 6:17-19. After naming the disciples, he came down (off the mountain, or perhaps on the slopes of the mountain or a hill) and the crowds came to him to hear him and be healed by him. And we learn something about the way Jesus’ power for healing worked, because in Luke 6:19, it says “the crowd sought to touch him, for power came out from him and healed them all” (ESV).

My favorite passage and other random thoughts

My favorite verse is Luke 6:12 which says “he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God” (ESV). I like that he would give up sleep for the sake of finding time alone with God. I like that he was looking for God to guide him. I like that it wasn’t a quickly conversation, even though it would seem relatively easy, if it was all about business, to give Jesus 12 names. Maybe he and God had to discuss it, and work through who would be the ones. Or maybe they had plenty of other things to talk about. But the fact that it took a long time, perhaps lingering in relationship, is also something I like.
