The First Easter Day (Pieces from the Four Gospels Put Together Chronologically)

[Editor’s note: each Gospel has it’s own perspective on the key events of that first Easter. Below, I try to piece them together in chronological order, so all the events are present.]

At the Tomb Easter Morning

Mark 16:1-4 (NIV)

When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”

But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away.

Matthew 28:2-8 (NIV)

[Before they arrived] there was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”

So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples.

John 16:2-18 (NIV)

[Mary] came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”

Verses on Walking with the Spirit and Not under the Law Freeing Us from Sin

I wanted to put all of these verses in one place for those who want to study this, and also those who already have the position that we are to walk with the Spirit and not by the Law, that they might have a handy source for Scriptures.

Under the New Covenant, Live by the Spirit, Not by the Law

dove“If you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.” Galatians 5:18 (NIV)

“The letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.” 2 Corinthians 3:6 (ESV)

“The law has authority over someone only as long as that person lives… You… died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another… in order that we might bear fruit for God.” Romans 7:1,4 (NIV)

“When we were in the realm of the flesh, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in us, so that we bore fruit for death. But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.” Romans 7:5-6 (NIV)

Verses on a Person’s Spiritual State Without Jesus

Certain topics keep coming up again and again in my writings and in my conversations with others. Therefore, I have decided that for these topics, I would list the relevant verses together, one topic at a time. It not only helps me get an overview of what the Bible says about each topic, but also provides a reference for others interested in studying the topic on their own. My intention is to add verses to each list as I discover them, though I try to be reasonably thorough when I first assemble each topic.

We were darkness before having Jesus in our lives

“At one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord” Ephesians 5:8 (ESV)

We were in darkness, and under it’s domain

He “called you out of darkness into his marvelous light” 1 Peter 2:9 (ESV)

“He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son” Colossians 1:13 (ESV)
