Broader outline of each section of passage

Matthew 19:16-26; Mark 10:17-27; Luke 18:18-27. Luke identifies the rich young man that comes to Jesus to ask a question as a “ruler”. This could possibly mean that he was a religious leader, a Pharisee perhaps, and possibly also a member of the Sanhedrin. These suppositions are not definitive. In any case, he asks Jesus what he must do to have eternal life. Jesus replies with key items from the Ten Commandments, which the young man says he has kept.

Mark says that Jesus, when he looked at the young man “loved him” (which I believe means felt compassion for him. And he tells him that if he wants to be perfect, he she go sell all he has, give it to the poor, then come follow Jesus. But at this, the young man goes away very sad, because he was very rich.

Jesus then tells his disciples that it is very difficult for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God. And his disciples were astonished, because they felt that if a rich person can’t get in, then who can?

Matthew 19:27-30; Mark 10:28-31; Luke 18:28-30. Peter tells Jesus they have left everything to follow him, and Jesus tells him that they will sit on 12 thrones in heaven, and that anyone who leaves things will be repaid in kind in this world a hundered-fold, and will have eternal life, but they will also be persecuted in this life.

My favorite passage and other random thoughts

My favorite verse is Mark 10:21 “Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, ‘You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me'” (ESV). The reason I chose it is because this news was very hard news for the young man to receive, and it could have sounded cruel. But we see that Jesus looked on the man with compassion, so these words were loving words. And I am intrigued by a lifestyle of having no possessions. It certainly goes against the wisdom of the Dave Ramsey’s of the world — the wisdom of most of the American church. Something about being free of possessions frees one to be totally focused on drawing on God’s resources, since one doesn’t have any resources of his own.
