Broader outline of each section of passage

John 8:31-59. The text says that this is a conversation with Jews who believed Jesus, but then they get in an argument with Jesus. Jesus talks about freedom and slavery. I don’t think his listeners really understood what he was saying. He was talking about being set free from sin, and that those who believe in him would find that freedom.

Jesus goes on to tell them that they neither have Abraham as a father (though by blood he was) nor did they have God as their Father. And he says something really key: if you love God, you will also love Jesus.

Then Jesus teaches about the devil. He says the devil is a murderer and has no truth in him — that he is the father of lies.

Finally, Jesus basically says that He is God, by saying that he was before Abraham, and by using the special phrase “I am”, which is what God tells Moses to tell the people is his name.

John 8:59. In response to Jesus claiming to be God, the people sought to stone him to death for blasphemy, but Jesus was able to leave the Temple.

John 9:1-7. Jesus healed a man born blind by spitting on the ground and putting mud in the man’s eyes, and then telling him to wash in the pool of Siloam. I have always assumed he meant to wash the mud out of his eyes, but I suppose it might be also a kind of cleansing of his whole body. The former still makes better sense to me. Before Jesus healed him, his disciples asked him whose sin caused the man to be born blind — I suppose they were expecting it to be a sort of cause and effect. But Jesus said that sin was not the cause at all — rather, it was so the works of God would be displayed.

John 9:8-12. People were shocked that the man could see. And they asked him how he got his sight, and he told them what Jesus did for him.

My favorite passage and other random thoughts

This passage records another sparring match between Jesus and the Jewish religious leaders, with Jesus still trying to get the religious leaders to see how they had twisted the faith to the point that they didn’t even recognize the Messiah. My favorite verse in this chapter is John 8:36 “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (NIV). First, I like it, because I like the imagery of Jesus releasing people, including me, from bondage. Second, in context, He is really saying that He is releasing those who follow Him from the bondage of sin. It is such a beautiful feeling when you can walk in the freedom of not being perpetually stuck in a pattern of sin. Three, the “indeed” to me emphasizes that this is a true freedom, and also a permanent freedom. It seems that the prerequisite of finding this freedom is to know truth (v. 32), which I think means that we learn to see and think differently. A prerequisite of knowing the truth is to be a disciple of Jesus (v. 31), and a prerequisite of being a disciple is abiding in His Word (ESV, NASB, Amplified), which means among other things to try to live according to what Jesus taught.
