John 8:31-59. The text says that this is a conversation with Jews who believed Jesus, but then they get in an argument with Jesus. Jesus talks about freedom and slavery. My favorite passage and other random thoughts
This passage records another sparring match between Jesus and the Jewish religious leaders, with Jesus still trying to get the religious leaders to see how they had twisted the faith to the point that they didn’t even recognize the Messiah. My favorite verse in this chapter is John 8:36 “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (NIV). First, I like it, because I like the imagery of Jesus releasing people, including me, from bondage. Second, in context, He is really saying that He is releasing those who follow Him from the bondage of sin. It is such a beautiful feeling when you can walk in the freedom of not being perpetually stuck in a pattern of sin. Three, the “indeed” to me emphasizes that this is a true freedom, and also a permanent freedom. It seems that the prerequisite of finding this freedom is to know truth (v. 32), which I think means that we learn to see and think differently. A prerequisite of knowing the truth is to be a disciple of Jesus (v. 31), and a prerequisite of being a disciple is abiding in His Word (ESV, NASB, Amplified), which means among other things to try to live according to what Jesus taught.
