Broader outline of each section of passage

Matthew 9:35-38; 10:1-15; Mark 6:7-13; Luke 9:1-6. This passage begins by telling us that Jesus was going around to all the cities and villages, teaching and healing. But there were so many people with very serious needs, so he instructs his disciples to pray that the Lord would send out people to help — laborers in the harvest. Jesus tells us that the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.

Jesus then sends out his twelve disciples. Their message was to be that the Kingdom of heaven is at hand. They were to heal and to cast out demons and raise the dead. Jesus also gave instructions about who to minister to (Israel, not Gentiles or Samaritans), and how to live and interact with each village.

While the account in Mark is much shorter than that of Matthew, it mentions a detail not mentioned elsewhere: that the disciples anointed people with oil who were sick, and they were healed by that.

Matthew 10:16-25. When Jesus begins this warning, it seems like he is talking about this short missions trip he just sent them on. But then you realize that he is talking about something further into the future, and that maybe he is speaking more broadly than a warning about his disciples being persecuted. He seems to be warning that other followers of Jesus will be persecuted, too.

Matthew 10:26-33. Jesus tries to encourage his disciples in light of his previous warning about persecution. He says that each follower is of great value, and that no detail of their life — no need — escapes God’s notice and care. But of utmost importance is to acknowledge God before people, and not to deny God before people.

Matthew 10:34-39. These are some very challenging words from Jesus. He seems to be saying that there will be conflict with other people, particularly family members, for those who put their faith in him. Furthermore, he says that we have to be willing to give up our lives for the sake of following him.

Matthew 10:40-42. Jesus says that there will be blessings for those who even help his followers.

My favorite passage and other random thoughts

My favorite passage, which many miss because it includes the last verse of a chapter and the first verse of the following chapter, is Matthew 9:37-10:1 “He said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.’ And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction” (ESV). I find it ironic — in a good way — that Jesus tells them to pray for laborers to be sent out, then he sends them out. I guess you have to be careful what you pray for! But in all seriousness, I want to both pray for laborers and be one, too.
