Matthew 13:54-58; Mark 6:1-6. Jesus came to Nazareth, where he was raised. And he taught in the synagogue, and astonished people. Yet they people did not believe in him, because they knew him and his family, and could not believe he had special abilities. And the passage says that he couldn’t do any mighty work there, because of their unbelief.
My favorite passage and other random thoughts
The theme woven throughout these verses is faith for miracles. The woman who was bleeding believed, and Jesus said it was her faith that made her well. When Jairus was tempted to doubt after he heard that his daughter had died, Jesus reminded him, “Do not fear, only believe” (Mark 5:36, ESV) — and Jesus healed her. (I imagine that fear is a major obstacle to believing for miracles.) When Jesus healed the two blind man, he said that “according to your faith” (Matthew 8:29, ESV) it would be done to them. And in Nazareth, no major miracles were done, due to their lack of faith. I am certainly challenged by these readings to believe that Jesus is still healing, and that I should see more people healed, as long as I don’t cultivate doubt or fear, but believe.
