After Completing the Bible Reading

Broader outline of each section of passage

John 1:1-18. This packs a lot of significant revelation about the nature of Jesus and his purpose into a very small place! It talks about Jesus being God, being involved in Creation of the universe, and sitting next to God the Father in heaven. Jesus is described as being the light which overpowers darkness who came into the world as a human, yet was rejected by the people he primarily came to save, though some did believe and receive him. We also learn that John the Baptist came to witness to who Jesus was.

Matthew 1:1-17. This is a listing of the forebears of Jesus through Joseph. Would be completely boring except that it highlights exceptional women in Jesus’ line, including several who were not Jewish by blood.

Luke 3:23-38. This is the listing of forebears of Jesus through Mary. Not terribly exciting, but a who’s who of the Old Testament.

My favorite passage and other random thoughts

Sorry that today’s reading had a lot of what I consider boring, BUT, I personally found John 1:1-18 incredibly fascinating, because it tells us all sorts of things about Jesus that we might not know so clearly from the rest of Scripture, especially about his nature and purpose. It talks about Jesus being God, being involved in Creation of the universe, and sitting next to God the Father in heaven. Jesus is described as being the light which overpowers darkness who came into the world as a human, yet was rejected by the people he primarily came to save, though some did believe and receive him.

The trouble with the passage from John is that it is so full of gems that I have a hard time deciding which part of it I like best! I think I’ll go with John 1:10-12, which says, “though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him… his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (NIV).

I like the contrast of something that by nature is immensely sad with something that is breathtaking. People should have been able to recognize the co-Creator of the universe — especially the Jewish people, because they had the Scriptures which told of Jesus’s coming, but so few people actually recognized who He was. That is sad. It is like the host of the party being booted out of his own house!

YET, for those who did grasp who Jesus was, the Son of God and the promised Savior of the world, these are the ones who have the special promise — the right — to be children of God! I thank God that somehow I recognized that Jesus was who He claimed to be, and now I am a dearly loved son!
